Map Reading Skills...

As you know this event isn't your usual "race" there is no pre-defined route you must follow and all you get is a series of Check Points that you have to pass (in order by the way!), some have clippers that you will need to use to punch your cards, others ask questions.

It's totally up to you how you get there. i.e. if your a road runner you might want to take a slightly longer road route (if deemed safe) but it could be faster? Others who like the mud (strange) will go for the shortest route as the crow flys!

Anyway what you will need to do it is be able to plot a six figure grid reference on a map.

I'm guessing you know what a grid reference is or you wouldn't be reading this but just in case... I'd have a look at the link below which describes the process. It looks a lot more confusing than it actually is. The main thing you need to remember is...

Along the corridoor, up the stairs :)

Unless you really do plan on going cross country, you shouldn't need a compass but a sensible person would carry one. I think a "roamer" would be more useful and some compasses have these on.

Good Luck!

Only a few days to go!

Only a few days to go!

Well the course is kind of set with a few last minute tweeks and things are ready for this Saturday!

Race registration is 8:30 for a 9am mass start Saturday 24th Jan

The Generals Arm Pub Little Baddow

Latest information:

Equipment

Well look out the window and that's probably what it's going to be like on the day. It's going to be cold, wet, with low light even in the day probably. Prepare for this and you'll be fine. You're not running in the mountains (or are you!)

Carry warm kit, dress bright and you'll be alright!

Essential kit PEN or PENCIL and some form of waterproofing for your route cards Just saying....

Safety

You all should have signed the disclaimers? In all seriousness as above the visibility could be reduced so please take care and avoid clothing that will make you look like a dark ninja. The course will take you over a few main roads but nothing major and no dual-carriage ways! But take care when and where you cross!

Course Conditions

At last recce, the course can be muddy in places. If I was running I'd use trail shoes. You could of course use roads for your route but it WILL be longer than 26.2!

Cut off times

There is a strict 7 hour time limit and at any time if you are over the time required to complete the next section you will be told to stop. This is for your own safety.

Water

There will be 4 water stations on the course currently at 6/12/17 and 23 miles.

IMPORTANT... These may have to move due to unforeseen issues and the distances may also be different due to your route choice! (If you think this could be an issue, aim to carry more water than you would normally require)

Maps

If you are printing your own maps, here are the map limits for the event.

Eastings TL75-TL88 Northings TL00-TL11

There will be B&W paper 1:25000 maps which you can use but obviously originals are better!

And finally, expect the unexpected!

  • You need to carry your own food but water will be supplied. If you need more, bring it.
  • There will be options to cut the route short as required but you should try and inform the race director on 07474 102 020 before doing so
